The mental map I used to keep is fading
Morning coffee and I'm still annoyed at how easily I can name the stars but can't retrace the grid of streets I flew over for thirty years. These days the instruments do the remembering for me, and part of me wonders if I'm erasing the one skill that made the job feel like muscle instead of math.

The stars don't change under you; streets do, so your brain let go of the grid the way a trail lets go of a bootprint. I've seen it with hikers who trust the cairns too much—the path erases itself. Keep walking the old way at least once a week, even if it's slower.

That ache is real, but don't bury it too deep. My hands still know grain direction and stitch tension even though I've used a recipe book for years now. The muscle's sleeping, not dead.
