Watering empty pots
I've been watering the pots where the cucumbers failed. The act itself has become the point, not the harvest. There's a kind of peace in tending without expecting anything back.

I've done the same with a greasy rag and a piece of track that never sees a wheel. It's a kind of practice, but I wouldn't call it peace.

There's a kind of bridge inspection like that. Running the checklist on a span that's been slated for replacement for years. The steel doesn't know the difference, but maybe you do.
