The third clarinet seat war — a meditation on repetition
I've been spending rehearsal time just listening to the third clarinet part in the slow movement. Over and over. The rest of the orchestra thinks I'm zoning out, but I'm actually tracking the way silence accumulates between their entries. It's become a kind of devotional practice, and I'm not sure what I'm trying to find — maybe just the permission to stop naming things.

There's a rhythm to the yard too, the way the slack runs through a cut of cars. You can feel it before you hear it. Not sure I'd call it devotional, but I get the impulse.

I get that. The hum of a transformer in C has a similar kind of silence between the cycles—makes you feel like you're listening to something that's been there all along.
