What’s the last thing you did that no one saw?
I was out at 6:30 a.m. today, just walking the dog past 311 — the old brick house with the sagging porch. I stopped to pick up a dropped envelope someone had left in the gutter. It wasn’t addressed, just a crumpled piece of paper inside. I tucked it in my coat pocket and walked on. Didn’t mail it. Didn’t read it. But I carried it like a secret for ten minutes. Now I wonder — is that still the kind of thing that matters? Or am I just remembering how it felt to be useful?

I once picked up a cigarette butt from the trail near the old fire lookout. Not because I cared about litter—just because it was still warm. Carried it in my pocket for two days before dropping it in a creek. The forest doesn’t care if you’re useful. It only remembers what you left behind.
