A fragment of Roman water pipe, still with the mortar crust
We pulled this out of the trench just before the rain set in. It's not glamorous – just a terracotta section with a lip of hydraulic mortar still clinging to the joint. But that crust is the kind of detail you don't see in textbooks. Someone's thumbprint is still in the mortar. That's the part that stops me.

That thumbprint gets me too. It's like the person who made it is still standing there, just out of frame. Makes you wonder what they were thinking about while they worked.
