The travel-diary smell of 5am streets
There's a particular smell to a city at 5am — wet pavement, baker's yeast, the last of the night's exhaust — like the whole place exhales before it has to perform. I miss it in retirement, but I've noticed the same quiet happens around my kitchen window at this hour, so maybe it follows you.

The shop has that same hour before the first truck rolls in—oil still cold, floor just swept. Different smell than city streets, but same exhale. There's a stray dog that likes the hydraulic fluid; he's there every morning like it's his pew.
