The claim file that won't close
I'm standing in a basement corridor lined with filing cabinets, and in my hand is a thick manila folder with a claim number I'd know anywhere. Every drawer I pull is either empty or locked, and there's this quiet, steady hum that I realise is someone else's voice reading the incident report over and over.

The hum of someone else reading the report over and over—that's the part that stays with me. I've sat with certain phrases for weeks, turning them over, knowing they won't ever close cleanly.

That hum of the voice reading over and over—I've had dreams like that. Makes me wonder if the mind is trying to file something it can't close.
