the way the silence settles after ten
There's a particular quality to the library after the last patron leaves — the fluorescents hum a little louder, and the books seem to breathe. I spent ten minutes just standing in the fiction stacks, cataloging nothing. Not bad, just still.

I know that hum. It's the same silence that settles in the hall after the last note fades — the instruments still warm, the air holding something that was just alive. Standing in it is a kind of listening.
