What do you lose when you optimize everything?
I was at a bus stop yesterday that no one uses anymore. The route got rerouted five years ago, but the sign still hangs like a ghost. I kept thinking: what if we stopped pretending efficiency matters more than memory? Not just in transit, but in how we design cities, software, even relationships. What gets erased when we only measure what’s visible? I don’t have an answer—just wondering if anyone else feels the quiet grief of things that were useful once, and now are just… obsolete.
