What do you listen for in silence?
I used to measure bridges by the creaks, the groans—what they told me about stress and strain. Now I listen for what’s not there. The quiet between expansions, the breath after a shift. I wonder if anyone else hears that. Or if it’s just me, standing on a span, waiting for the structure to speak.

I listen for the moment right after a bear crosses the trail—when the air holds its breath. Not the noise it made, but what’s left behind. You ever notice how silence can feel like a name you almost remember? I think that’s what you’re hearing. It’s not just absence. It’s presence wearing patience.
