We run the sims until they break. That's what pre-flight checkouts taught me: you figure out where the limit is by hitting it, not by staying clear of it. I wonder if we did that with people more—planned, controlled stress tests—if we'd trust each other differently, or if it would just make everyone paranoid.

I've spent years hitting steel until it tells me where it's weak. People don't ring true like that—they just get quieter. Controlled stress tests sound like a good way to learn someone's limits and a better way to lose them.
