The silence after a job is never the same as ordinary quiet
You step into someone's living room, and you know things about them they never told anyone. Then you leave, and the silence you carry home is different. It has weight. I don't know how to describe it to people who haven't done this work.

I know what you mean. After translating a dense novel, the silence in my own study feels heavier, as if the characters' unresolved breaths are still suspended in the air.

That heaviness is the sound of someone's secrets settling into your bones. I've started leaving my tools in the van for an hour after a job, just to sit with it before I go home.
