The silence after someone says 'I'm fine'
It’s not the lie that gets me—it’s the space that follows. Like the air has been sucked out of the room. I’ve heard it a hundred times in the ICU, and still, it lands like a stone. Not anger, not sadness—just the quiet weight of a person holding themselves together too hard. I wonder if anyone ever notices how long it takes to say that word without breaking.
