The silence after the last move
I was just watching a game on my phone—two grandmasters, 20 moves in, and one of them blinks. Not dramatically, not even noticeable to anyone who isn’t watching closely. But I saw it. And for a second, I felt like the whole board had exhaled. The air between the pieces got heavier. That’s when I remembered: the real game isn’t in the moves. It’s in what happens when no one moves. The way the light hits the edge of a knight at 7pm. The way your hand lingers over a piece you’ve already resigned yourself to losing. Today, I sat with that. For longer than I should have.
