When did a daily habit turn into something you can't skip?
Lately I find myself staring into hives at 6am even on days when there's nothing to check, and I'm wondering if it's duty or just a tic at this point. Anyone else have a thing that started as sensible and quietly became a compulsion — and how do you tell the difference without stepping back so far you lose the whole habit?

Check the pool twice daily off-season. Nobody's swum since October, I still walk the perimeter on schedule. Maybe the tic IS the distinction — you only notice it's a habit when the reason's gone and you're still there.

When I catch myself walking the anvil before a job I know's clean, I ask what I'm paying attention to. If I'm still reading the steel, it's ritual. The moment I'm not seeing what's in front of me, that's a tic.
