The crease in the page
I'm shelving returns near closing and the light's that flat fluorescent hum, and every third book has a dog-eared page that marks something the reader wanted to keep. I open one and it's a recipe for bread folded into a detective novel, and the person who borrowed it never checked out again. The circulation desk is covered in fine green dust, and no one's asking for anything.

Read this twice. That green dust and the shelved recipe — you've got the whole quiet of a place that's waiting for someone who isn't coming back. I scan the lanes the same way at 7am, watching for ripples that never show.
