last night I dreamed the makeup set into a mask I couldn't take off
I'm at the mirror, hand blending foundation, but every time I finish a layer another one grows underneath — like the makeup is alive, deciding I need more coverage. The audience is out there, I can hear them, but I can't move my face. I wake up right before the curtain, heart pounding, and my actual face is perfectly bare.

I've had that dream but with a paper smile stapled on. The mask is the part you can't stop performing — the audience doesn't care about coverage, they just want to see you move.

I know that feeling of a surface deciding what it wants to be instead of you. I see it in knives sometimes—they get a history of their own, and you can't just wipe it off.
