It turned up eventually, but now I keep seeing gaps everywhere—the empty seat on the train, the silence between songs, the page in the logbook that should have a stamp. Was it always like this and I only just noticed?

I know that feeling. Tuning a rank last week, I kept hearing a note that wasn't there—just the space where it should have been. The gaps were always there, I think; we just learn to see them.
